Coordonation is an initiative inspired by the story of our friend, Yateen Madhukar Chodnekar, for whom we were able to witness life-changing effects of organ donation.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a devastating lung condition that currently has no cure. There are treatments that can help slow the progression, however, a fight against this disease takes a massive toll on the quality of life of the affected individual and their family. This rare disorder calcifies the lungs and progressively eliminates all lung function. For our friend, the only hope of regaining his health was through a bilateral lung transplant. With a strong willpower, the relentless support of family and friends, and luck, they were finally able to find a match and undergo surgery. The transplant surgery and recovery after that was miraculous and the progress he has made thus far is astounding. He, his family and friends have now started YMC Organ donation and Transplant foundation to spread awareness and assist the process of saving lives. In watching his story unfold, we realized that more awareness needs to be generated among youth about the tissue donation process and the transformative effects it can have on the lives of many patients. As young people, the choices we make right now will influence future healthcare. The current issues surrounding donor shortages and transplant surgeries must be given more visibility and recognition. By facilitating conversation about these critical issues in the community and making well-informed decisions, we can help save hundreds of deserving lives. As a result, Coordonation was born. This is a student-led organization that work to educate youth about organ and tissue donation. The choice to become a donor is extremely important and highly personal and as such, individuals should be adequately equipped with the knowledge and resources. Through social media platforms and youth-targeted events, we hope to increase awareness about donation, address any misinformation about the process, and encourage engagement with the issue.
